Select Board Forms Search Committee For Town Clerk
Select Board · Meeting of August 3, 2026
Rutland's Select Board unanimously created a five-member search committee to replace retiring Town Clerk Anita Carlson, closing out the town's last elected administrative office. Carlson, who is stepping down September 26 but offered to stay through the November election, warned the board that "we have worked easily 80, 80 hours in a week" during presidential election cycles and urged hiring someone with real election-administration experience. The board also voted to sign a testimony letter to the state PILOT Commission, citing a reimbursement disparity for state-owned land running from roughly $5 an acre in the Berkshires to nearly $5,000 an acre in Suffolk County, on land that makes up about 30 percent of Rutland's total acreage.
Town Administrator Heather Butler reported the town secured a $200,000 MassDOT grant toward a used road grader and locked in lower electricity rates of about 16 cents per kilowatt-hour through a new community-energy program. During public comment, resident Corrine Puliafico demanded an apology from member Harry Sechman over remarks comparing the canceled Fourth of July parade and fireworks to a disaster, calling it "an insulting comparison."
