Rutland override reverts to $3 million after school vote delay
Select Board · Meeting of April 6, 2026
Rutland's override ask reverts to $3 million after school panel misses its vote deadline. The Select Board and Finance Committee met jointly Monday to align on a $5.1 million, three-year Proposition 2½ override after the School Committee could not vote in time to lower its FY27 assessment by roughly $425,000, pushing the town past a 35-day ballot-filing deadline. Vice Chair Alexander Mowatt told colleagues "this town needs an override, period," while a Finance Committee member identified only as Darren asked officials point-blank, "are we being a little sly here with the way we're doing this?" Town official Heather said the board is "doing everything we can to maintain that transparency." Some Finance Committee members raised concerns about cutting municipal staff while the town fully funds the school assessment if the override fails; both the Finance Committee and Select Board unanimously voted to adjourn after roll calls.
