Finance Committee backs tiered override to close $3M budget gap
Finance Committee · Meeting of January 8, 2026
RUTLAND — Finance and Select boards jointly approve tiered property tax override framework for FY27. The boards voted 4–1 to support a three-tiered override structure at $5 million, $4 million, and $3 million (amounts subject to change) to address a projected $3 million structural deficit. Town Administrator Heather Butler presented the FY27 budget overview, with the Wachusett Regional School District consuming $20 million of the $32 million total budget, or 63 percent.
A $3 million override would raise the tax rate from $13.87 to $15.70 and increase taxes by approximately $1,000 on a $550,000 home. The boards will reconvene January 21 to review detailed tiered-override information and additional analysis.
