Rutland Select Board launched preservation advocacy after the state Department of Conservation and Recreation announced Rutland Prison Camp demolition plans. The board voted unanimously to send urgent letters to state officials, conduct reverse-911 notification to residents, post website and social media alerts, and request legal consultation on available legal remedies. The Department of Conservation and Recreation plans to reduce cell block walls to three to four feet, gut the root cellar interior, and seal and fill the historic structure, citing public safety and vandalism concerns.
The Rutland Historical Commission, which had previously proposed an alternative preservation plan that DCR declined, joined the board's preservation advocacy effort.
